What is PDF?

PDF stands for Portable Document Format. It is a file format used to present documents in a way that is independent of software, hardware or operating systems. This means that a PDF document looks the same regardless of the device or software used to open it. PDFs can contain text, images, hyperlinks, and even interactive elements such as forms and videos.

History and popularity of PDF

PDF was developed in the early 1990s by Adobe Systems. The goal was to create a way for documents to be exchanged and printed digitally, while maintaining the appearance of the document regardless of the computer or printer being used.

  1. Universal display: From the beginning, one of the biggest advantages of PDF was its consistent display. A PDF document looks the same on a Windows computer, a Mac, or even on mobile devices.
  2. Integration of media: PDFs can contain not only text and images, but also multimedia elements such as sound, video and animations.
  3. Safety and security: PDF files can be protected with passwords and encryption. This makes it possible to restrict access to content or prevent printing and copying of information.

Because of these characteristics, PDF quickly became popular in many sectors, including business, education and government.

How does PDF work and why is it so widely used?

A PDF file contains a complete description of a captured document, including the text, fonts, images and structure needed to display it.

  1. Compatibility: Because PDFs are created in such a standardized way, they can be opened and viewed on almost any device, as long as a PDF reader is available. Adobe offers a free software, Adobe Reader, but there are numerous other free and paid PDF readers available.
  2. Preservation of design: A PDF accurately stores the formatting and design of a document. This is especially useful for things like brochures, manuals or other documents where layout is important.
  3. Compression: PDFs can contain large amounts of information, yet have relatively small file sizes. This makes them easy to e-mail or download from the Web.
  4. Interactivity: You can add interactive elements to a PDF, such as hyperlinks, buttons and forms. This makes them not just static representations of paper documents; they can provide dynamic, interactive digital experiences.

Essentially, when you need a consistent, reliable and universal format to share and present documents, PDF is often the best choice. It offers a combination of flexibility, reliability and ease of use that makes it one of the most widely used file formats in the world.
