What is duplicate content?

Duplicate content means that the same text or content can be found in multiple places on the Internet. This can be within one Web site or spread across different Web sites. For example, consider an article that you post on your own blog and then also on another site. For search engines, such as Google, this can be confusing. They don't know which version to show to people searching. Therefore, it is important to avoid this if you want your website to be found well.

How does duplicate content occur?

There are many ways the same content can appear in different places:

  1. Technical causes: Sometimes it happens accidentally. For example, if your website with and without "www" in front of it shows the same content (such as"www.voorbeeld.nl"and "example.co.uk").
  2. Copy and paste: Someone may see a nice piece of text and copy it to their own Web site. Or maybe you yourself use a piece of text multiple times on different pages of your site.
  3. Product descriptions: If you have an online store, you might use the same description that the manufacturer gives for a product. Other Web stores that sell the same product might also use that description.

Even if it happens accidentally, it's important to know that search engines like Google don't like duplicate content. They want to show unique and original information to their users.

What to do about duplicate content?

It is important to avoid or resolve duplicate content if it is already on your website:

  1. Write yourself: Always try to write your own texts and avoid simply copying texts from other websites.
  2. Use redirects: If you know that the same content is in multiple places on your website, you can set up a redirect. This means that when someone tries to visit one of the duplicate pages, they are automatically directed to the correct page.
  3. Tell Google preference: You can let Google know which version of a page is the most important. You do this with something called a "canonical link." It's a bit technical, but it helps Google understand which page to show.
  4. Check your website: There are tools on the Internet that can help you discover if there is duplicate content on your Web site. These tools will then give you an overview of where the problems are.

In simple words, duplicate content is when the same text appears in multiple places online. It can cause problems with how your Web site is displayed in search engines such as Google. So it's good to know where duplicate content is on your site and how to fix or prevent it.
