What is anchor link?

An anchor link, also known as an anchor, inner-page link or internal link, points to a specific section within a Web page. Instead of sending visitors to an entirely different Web site or page, an anchor link navigates them directly to a specific section of the same page they are already on. This feature is especially useful in long articles, FAQ sections or extensive manuals where users want to quickly jump to a relevant section without having to go through the entire content.

Operation and construction of an anchor link

An anchor link consists of two main components in HTML: the id attribute and the <a> element with an href attribute pointing to that specific id.

Suppose you have a long web page with several sections, and you want to link to the section on "Important Information." You would first assign a unique ID to that section, for example:

<h2 id="important-info">Belangrijke Informatie</h2>

Then, somewhere else on the same page (usually at the top), you would create a link pointing to that ID:

<a href="#important-info">Spring naar Belangrijke Informatie</a>

The character # for "important-info" in the href attribute value indicates that it is a link to an ID on the same page. Now when a user clicks on this link, they are immediately taken to the "Important Information" section.

Benefits and usage scenarios of anchor links

Using anchor links on web pages has several benefits and can significantly improve the user experience:

  1. Ease of navigation: In comprehensive content such as manuals, tutorials or frequently asked questions, anchor links help users quickly navigate to the specific information they are looking for.
  2. Improved readability: For content writers and Web designers, anchor links provide a way to present content in an organized and structured way. By having a table of contents with anchor links, a reader can quickly get an overview of what is available and go directly to relevant sections.
  3. SEO (Search Engine Optimization): Although anchor links are designed primarily for ease of use, they can also play a role in SEO. By highlighting important sections of a page with anchor links, you can highlight certain information on your page.
  4. Sharing and referencing: Anchor links allow users to share a link to a specific section of a page. Suppose someone finds a highly relevant section of an article and wants to share it directly with someone else. Instead of saying "scroll halfway down the page," they can simply share the anchor link that leads directly to that section.

In today's world of digital content and Web design, it is essential to think about user experience. Anchor links are just one of the many tools available to web developers and designers to ensure that content is not only high quality, but also easily accessible and navigable for users.
